KPR-009'A Day Without Comfort' by Nick Hudson ![]() Available now!
Following on from 2010’s epic "My Antique Son" (made with his sometime ensemble The Academy of Sun), "A Day Without Comfort" sees Nick again in solo guise, offering up a platter of eleven hauntingly-executed songs dealing with the biography of a dear friend and with Nick’s own manifold political/spiritual/social concerns. Nick Hudson on 'A Day Without Comfort':"‘A Day Without Comfort’ was conceived as a solo record, in the sense that it may on occasion sound like a band, but would be entirely solo, hermetic, even, in contrast to the previous record, which was the work of thirteen musicians of disparate backgrounds. It’s an album of songs, whose lyrics, written before the music, were birthed zealously over two days in the company of a dear friend, whose extraordinary life the lyrics interweave with my own (morbid) socio-political reflections on contemporary life in England. Structurally, it loosely traces the trajectory of a life (birth-rejection of authoritarian institutions-suicide attempt-resuscitation-reintegration into society), as a framing device to consider the tensions of being a self-situated radical/outsider (of any persuasion) in an increasingly homogenized and mediocrity-saturated society. Given the weight of the lyrical content, my intention was to have the music be accessible, replete with pop hooks, choruses, and structures adherent to established song-form. Naturally, being me, this deviated somewhat, but it’s as close to a pop record as I deem myself capable of making at this juncture. ‘A Day Without Comfort’ is at once my tribute to a close friend and my ‘politically-fucked-off’ record." ‘Whale/Taylor’, the first collaboration between Sydney-based composer Marcus Whale (Scissor Lock) and artist / filmmaker Aspen Michael Taylor, holds as its central focus a trashed underside of ambience, caked and hidden in decay and resonance. Mirroring the themes of duality and shadowing represented in its track titles and artwork, the album’s moments of repose always feel as if they’re under constant threat of being engulfed by an all-encompassing darkness.

The first part of a self-devouring trilogy themed around death, immolation and rebirth, Nick Hudson’s first release on Kiddiepunk Records, ‘The Elegy’ verges on the sublime so frequently that it seems like he must have made a deal with an omnipotent deity. At once tender, expansive, intimate and beautiful, ‘The Elegy’ occupies that infinite, indefinable space in between the worlds; songs that open up entire, utterly vivid and transcendant 'scapes. Spare, haunting and delicately forthright, ‘The Elegy’ weaves together chant, folk-song, Americana, and subtle electronics to create a deeply stirring and evocative work. The cover artwork is by Alex Rose.

KPR-006... Might as well be KPR-666 with the unabashed hell that gets unleashed on this release by Aspen Michael Taylor.
Features three tracks, including 'The Anti-Birth', which is akin to being trapped inside an emotional black hole. Managing to be both desperate and expansive, it's locked inside a deep groove one part hell-stasis, one part beatific. By the time you get to the second track, 'Celing', a sonic replication of a very specific physical interior (map included), you come face-to-face with something evil that lives "up there", in that particular corner where the walls meet the ceiling. What does it all mean? You'll know when you hear it and you turn it up real fucking loud. 'Milk Teeth' comes in special hand-assembled packaging and also includes an 8-page zine. The actual disc is of the protective black-dye kind. Released: 2009 TRACKLISTING(*Listening to tracks requires the Quicktime Plugin)PURCHASE INFO

Carisa Bianca Mellado’s stunning debut solo record ‘The New Queen’ is a record so bold, forthright and utterly unclassifiable that it feels like it’s rewriting all the rules of genre. Hovering between experimental classical, gothic and avant-opera, ‘The New Queen’ takes on a haunting and otherworldly quality, leading the listener through ancient corners of the psyche – as though dancing through medieval carnivals and coronations; into dark dungeons, barns and funeral grounds. At times harrowing, disturbing, luscious and grandiose, ‘The New Queen’ is a deeply affecting work of true artistry and vast beauty.

Combining the band’s penchant for slow, repetitive trance music, like epic 16-minute track ‘The Return’, the sprawling ‘Mad A’ and the instrumental ‘The Double’ with the apocalyptic post-punk of ‘Bones’ and ‘70 Days & 70 Nights’ and numbers like the tribal ‘The Valley Of The Kings’, the war-opera battle call ‘Prayer’ and the pounding electricity of ‘Math’, 'Awake In Slumberland' paints a landscape which is populated by ghosts, mythology, intoxication, madness and electricity that builds slowly to its frenzied and disoriented climax.
